"whale tails" or cavitation plate foils
 

Side to side stabilization is much very different than reducing bow lift
while getting the boat on plane.

Tabs will help get the bow down faster, not the same as "reducing lift" but the
result is the same, at least it seems to me it is.

So I guess, from the other posts, I was wrong & my friend was right. :( I hate
it when I have to admit I'm wrong.

So I called & let him know he was right -- now he's asking me "which is best" --
how did I become some sort of reference for whale tails? Last time I say
something is worthless!

A number of years ago, I added one to a 17' bass boat with a 75hp
motor. The hole shot was noticiably better, lost maybe 1 mph on the
top end, The best part was remarkably lower planing speed. Didn't
notice any difference in turn performance.

Nope.

My buddy's offshore raceboat a few years ago, came in 600# overweight.
Builder told him . . . Tough. You own it. Not competitoive, but you own
it.

I had a 18 foot century with a 140 mercruiser i/o. The boat was not much
good for salom skiing because it took so long for the front end to come down
and get on plane. With a plate shaped like a wing, sorry don't remember
brand, it would plane slightly faster, making the boat a tiny bit more
tolerable. With the the out drive trimmed up, the boat also turned better.
They are deffinately NOT a solution, but may help your particular boat.
