. .. Anybody here (here - here - here.....) Pretty empty (empty - empty - empty....) Oh - nice echo (echo - echo - echo....) Hmmmm - anybody up for some acapella do wop from the good old days (days - days - days....) Yesterday, feeling aimless, visited Bass Pro Shops in Auburn NY. The lure department alone is the size of a typical IGA supermarket. In order to create the fishing equivalent of being downwind from a good bakery at 7:00 AM, they have an enormous tank full of local fish species to tantalize the customers. I managed to escape after spending just $16.00, because I've pretty much memorized what's in my tackle box, and what's in the spare inventory box in the basement. My female chaperone, theoretically there to help me stick to my budget, was not so lucky. She dropped close to $150.00. I've never really watched a woman shop for lures before, but it wasn't much different from the way they shop for clothes. Wander, touch, say "Oooh....this is pretty!", bounce in some random way to a different display. I reminded her that she has a penchant for throwing sinking lures right on top of evil sunken branches, and pointed out some jigs with those stiff weed guards. Response: "Yeah, but they're not as pretty as these other ones". Brilliant marketing at this place. A stretch of the parking lot was loaded with boats all ready to tow away, all chained to the guard rail. They'd shoveled paths through the snow to make sure winter-addled victims could get close enough to fondle the merchandise. |

We have two in this area I visit whenever I can, up near Bal'mer and down near Virginia Beach. I wish we had a Cabelas, though. I've got all the gear I need, so I mostly buy outdoor and casual clothing on sale when I shop there. |

We're supposed to get a Cabela's and Bass Pro in 2007 - it looks like Cabela's is going to get their store up and running first in East Hartford. Bass Pro is going to be over in Foxboro by The Razor. |
