"I killed a buzzard with it," owner Carroll Shelby said of his 1966
Shelby Cobra 427 Supersnake. "Nasty, nasty."

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (Jan. 21) - An 800-horsepower Shelby Cobra, once the
personal car of the racing veteran who developed the iconic sports car,
has sold for $5.5 million at auction, a record for an American car.

The sale of the 1966 Shelby Cobra "Super Snake" brought a packed house
to its feet Saturday at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction after
a pair of bidders drove the price up.

Carroll Shelby, 84, who created the Cobra in the '60s using Ford
engines and a British sport car chassis, said he built the Super Snake
- with twin superchargers on a 427 cubic inch V-8 - and drove it for
years.

"It's a special car. It would do just over three seconds to 60 (mph),
40 years ago," Shelby told the crowd before the sale.

"I killed a buzzard with it," he said. "Nasty, nasty."

The car had a twin, built for comedian Bill Cosby, but that car was
destroyed in an accident while being driven by another owner, according
to the Barrett-Jackson Web site.

Yeah - that's quite a price even for a collector.

I wasn't much into Shelby's - I've never been a Mustang fan.

I'm more of a Corvette guy.

I'm so so about Mustangs myself. Love that early 'fastback' design...but
the 70s version (Charlie's Angels) was a joke...
Anyway aren't we talking about a 'real Cobra'...not a Mustang.
The real Cobra is my all time favourite sportscar.... followed by the
Triumph TR6

I had a friend in Kansas City in the 1960s who had a full-dress Cobra. He
let me drive it a couple of times during practice sessions on airport SCCA
circuits in Oklahoma and Arkansas. It was a real sports car, uncluttered
by the overdone-ness of today's corvettes and mustangs. It was also a
bitch to get around short, tight courses.

There are a lot of kits and replicas floating around now-a-days. The real
Cobras are rare.
If I were inclined ... which I am not .... I think I'd prefer a newer Ford
GT. They stopped making them last year, I think, but can be found for
$150-$200K. The guy that bought one of our Florida houses bought one and
it is quite the machine.

The 427ci side oilers in the Cobras are monsters but they are not very good
as street engines.

There were ill handling dragsters. I could go around a corner side by side
with most 289 Cid Cobras but when we hit the straightaway was like a fueler
dragster compared to my Vette. We gave away about 1200# weight. Was a 1950
suspension design AC Bristol with a bigger motor.

Shelby was going to put a Chevy in the Cobra originally. But Ford would
sell him 500 motors on consignment. Iacocca's memoirs tell the story of
going to see Shelby, a former F1 world champion and thinking the motors are
all at a big factory and finds out he is storing the motors in a rented
garage at a house in a middle class neighborhood.

Because the weighed about 1200# less than a corvette was allowed to weight
for racing. Duntov designed and built the Grandsports, but never made the

GS's killed the Cobra. But not allowing Duntov to make and sell enough for
street use, they were never homologated for production racing.

Oh, and 800 HP....LMAO!!!!.....you guys believe EVERYTHING you read? If

Most of these HP claims you read in mags are under perfect conditions

The problem with the Ford 427 side-oilers was their unusual cam and

Evidently, you're thinking of a 6-71 "blower". and you never heard of
Paxton superchargers, which you can run duals. But no, you probably
never heard of that let alone thought of it.

Oh, and 800 HP....LMAO!!!!.....you guys believe EVERYTHING you read?

800 streetable hp in 1966 was pretty good. and it didn't have to be
"perfect dyno conditions.

A lot of the 426 hemi's were pumping out over 600 hp fromt he factory,
and had to be rated at 425 hp so they could qualify under federal
regulations for licensed production. Federal law said no street
licensing at that time could be over 450 hp , so chrysler parked it at
a neat 425. of course they never said what RPM that rating was (idle?)

Most of these HP claims you read in mags are under perfect conditions

From talking to people that have 'em (the tamer, non-supercharged 425HP,
2-4V versions) they are rough at low RPM, don't like to idle, and foul plugs
on a regular basis unless wound up to high RPM. I met a guy with a kit
Cobra (replica) at a car meet that had installed a 427 in it. He was
complaining that he had to pull and clean the plugs just about every time he
took it out.

A few years ago I almost bought a '64 "R" code Galaxie 500. I passed on it
when I discovered that although in mint shape it would be a garage queen. I
enjoy cars that you can drive.

Yep, that would have been interesting. If GM had moved forward with
the GS, Ford would have pulled Shelby in and funnelled money and
technology to him. We'd have had two factory supported cars.

Since GM killed the GS while in prototype stage, Shelby never had to
deal with them. They raced in different classes, and only met on the
track a couple of times. The GS was a little faster, but it faded
away, and Shelby felt no need to improve the Cobra, since the GS was
not a direct competitor.

Coulda, woulda, shoulda.... the Cobra is still the king.

I can understand that, because of the points/coil ignition. That is if
his is set to origional specs. HEI did wonders for plug fouling and
performance. The coils put out about 14,000v. and HEI, even the
earliest ones put out about 40,000v. makes a big difference in firing
plugs and plug life. Now some cars are pumping up to 90-105,000v.

Many a mechanic has been "hit" by extremely high voltage ignition.
