New Evinrude E-TEC video
It's been kind of slow and dull around here lately. To shake things up
a bit, here is a video from Evinrude that is now being shown on TV. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-7I00cZUE0 On various internet boating forums it has gotten a lot of comments and also its share of detractors. I'm surprised that it hasn't been mentioned here on rec.boats. |

I'll bet. That's really cool. I'm surprised that it hasn't been mentioned here on rec.boats. Well, that's not a problem now. Probably would have been fairer if they had started up the Yamaha :} LOL!!! I'm not surprised the clip wasn't mentioned here. There are only a few of us outboard fans here among the hoi polloi, the non-boaters, and the bitter coffee and rain contingent from Seattle. Well, let's face it - most of the outboard fans here own ancient technology four strokes. However, I am the cool one with the E-TEC. I RULE - YOU DROOL!! I only drool because I am the personal sex object of the women of Victoria's Secret, and they keep me chained to the bed 24-7, with only my laptop and a 3-foot-tall bottle of Viagra. I doubt I'd ever buy another two-stroke outboard. Well, look at it this way. In a tug of war, Yo-Ho is dead meat. :) Just proves Harry is delusional. |

The twin E-tecs are "****ing" on each other. I will try to get a picture. It is a classic. The only thing that would be better is if one was a Yammy. Because the "****er" on the larger E-TEC can be aimed wherever you like, some folks with twin engines direct the streams outwards on each side to "****" on others as they go by. The younger ones aim both "****ers" up and aft so they have their own roostertail as they go down the river. |

When I had my Contender, my indicators were aimed outboard, but into the water - just so I could see them. Aiming them up in the air doesn't make any sense at all. It's kind a like a Jolly Roger flag. I'm surprised that it hasn't been mentioned here on rec.boats. The tug of war does not make sense. Both motors have more than enough power to blow out the prop. Clearly a Yamaha fan. :) I agree. If they want to test engines on similar approaching identical boats, race them. Measure the fuel used and create some meaningful results. To be fair each company should set their own boat up and drive it. I don't know the ins/outs of how the race tests were done, but the boats were identical and the engines were set up according to manufacturer specs on the great Evinrude vs Merc/Yamaha I believe. But I agree with you on setting up the boats - might be interesting. I really don't have a dog in this fight. The local charter tour operator, running 38-52 foot pontoon boats, is now using E-Tecs and the captains are pleased. I've turned several bay boat operators onto E-TECs and I'm starting a small revolution up here. Once they get a ride on mine, it's all over for Merc or Yamaha. Guy in my old Marina sold his year old Optimax's off his Grady and went with E-TECs. There is one boat that has a curious choice of rigging. The twin E-tecs are "****ing" on each other. I will try to get a picture. It is a classic. The only thing that would be better is if one was a Yammy. Heh. I haven't seen a new large Evinrude on a boat down here in a considerably long time, two or three seasons at least. Yamahas, Mercs, the occasional Suzuki. I can't even recall seeing one prerigged at a local dealership. I wonder what Evinrude's market share is like these days. That's a good question and one I don't know. I know you are seeing more of them although not in the big block version like I have. You see a lot of 90s (which seems to be one hell of an engine) and 40s. I think once the proletariat gets past the whole ancient technology thing, I'll bet you will start seeing more of the big block engines. One of the weird things, boating wise, about this area (mid Chesapeake Bay) is that you don't see too many smaller outboard powered boats, the 12 to 16 footer dories, skiffs, et cetera, that are (or were) so common in New England. It's not that these boats are rare, because there were plenty of them in NE Florida, typically powered by 20-75 hp outboards. It's weird because the Chesapeake Bay is not typically as rough most days as the parts of Long Island Sound where I boated as a youth. We have chop but it isn't typically really rough. You'd think there would be a lot of smaller boats out every day. You've just gotten older, and things have changed. I'd bet that the smaller skiffs aren't as common around New England either any more. The current popular boat down here is the bay boat (Pathfinder, Boston Whaler dauntless, edgewater 243, etc). A close second is the panga-type boat (Andros, Gause, etc) |
