Boat cover repair with duct tape? Don't think so.
 

Hi,

I have a boat cover with a couple of 1" to 3" rips. I would hate to
buy a new cover just because of those small tears. So I'm looking at
ways to patch it. I know for a fact that duct tape is only a temporary
solution as it will not stand up to the elements (in California.)

My question is, is there any other tape that will perform better than
duct tape. Sewing is not really an option as getting that monster in
the sewing machine won't work.

BTW: The cover is made of 100% polyester.

Any ideas?

I have sewn patches on several boat covers. It is a somewhat time consuming
process to work the spot you need to repair under the foot of the sewing
machine but with patience, it can be done.

If you have a upholstery shop near by, they can do the task on one of their
industrial sewing machines if you choose not to do it on a home machine.

You might offer to help fight the material around for them when they are
ready to do the work. I have found it a lot easier with an assistant.

Finding color matching patch material might be a bit of a challenge
but a fabric supply store might have what you need..

You could sew it by hand. A needle and some polyester thread, you can put
some patches on pretty quickly and if you take your time you can do just as
good as any machine, maybe better.

I had a 6" tear in mine. A shop that specializes in boat covers, boat
seat covers, accessories, etc. charged me $25 to patch and sew it.

I have used iron on patches and a quick hand stitch in the past with good
luck

If it's 100% polyester, then go to a fabric store and get vinyl weld -
it's a kind of glue, but it welds the two edges together.

I have one for the Princecraft and have torn it many times in the past
two years - works great.

When I made my hovercraft, I used that vinyl weld as well as sewing the
skirt that holds air under the craft.

Duc tape the tear from the inside and run a bead of super glue down the
tear, which should be knitted together well. When the glue goes off, the
seam will be permanantly repaired, and you may or may not decide to
remove the tape afterwrds. Works very well.
