"However, the rescue was delayed while authorities established whether
it was a real emergency."

Hmmmm - sinking boat, struck by whales, Tasman Sea.

Nah - no emergency there.

Fared better than the SoCal guy last year maybe 2 years ago, that had a
breeching whale land on the boat killing him.

Does this sort of thing happen a lot? Is something that happens at night
mostly when the whales can't see you? I don't imagine they are doing it on
purpose but damn!! Crushed by whale, not an easy way to go. Can you put a
light on the bottom of your boat if you are near whales at night to let them
know you are there?

Was in the daytime, and very rare. I have had a Humpback about give me a
heart attack. Drifting with motor off and one blew about 2' from the
passenger side windshield. Loud noise and what looks like a water column
shooting up beside the boat. Had been watching the whales feed about 200
yards away and was not expecting the inspection. My boat is about 23'
overall and a Humpback is about 2x that.
