West Marine just got a special award for supporting our troops....

WEST MARINE HONORED WITH THE PATRIOT AWARD
FOR EXCEPTIONAL SUPPORT OF THE MEN AND WOMEN IN THE MILITARY

WATSONVILLE, Calif. (January 9, 2007) - Today, West Marine announced
that it has been given the Patriot Award by the Department of Defense,
for
exceptional support of employees in the military. West Marine and Store

Manager Dean Barillaro will be honored at a banquet on Saturday,
January
27th, 2007 in Greensboro, North Carolina, for outstanding support of
the
North Carolina Army National Guard along with SPC Meredith Miller, a
National
Guard soldier and West Marine associate.

Dean Barillaro, Store Manager for the Washington, North Carolina
location
noted "West Marine is a big advocate of hiring former and active
military
personnel. SPC Meredith Miller is a valued Associate and demonstrates
discipline, attention to detail, and tremendous follow-through which
are
attributes she learned in her Army National Guard training. SPC Miller
has been
a tremendous asset to our store and to our company."

customers
and our Associates" said Randy Repass, Founder, West Marine. "That is
the
foundation of our company."

SPC Miller noted, "Since I am a full time college student and an active

member of the North Carolina Army National Guard, I needed an employer
who
would be flexible and understanding of my military and school needs.
West
Marine is a great company to work for and Mr. Barillaro has been very
supportive of my National Guard training."

Nothing political there!

My son-in-law works for Raytheon, a company which also take great care of
it's employees in the Reserves. Of course, they're probably much more into
defense contracting than West Marine!

Do try to be consistent, Jim. Or at least not so darn obvious.

When I cut 'n paste an item about a boating supply company earning an
award for "supporting our troops" you say you're glad to hear it.

When I post an item about a company donating doors and windows to
restore historic lighthouses (no political connection, really) you
bitch about it.

Charles, I am extremely consistent. And what's wrong with being obvious? I
applaud West Marine for earning that award. The window article is obituary
page filler material.
I think Harry had it right. In both cases the companies in question, used
their community service acts to back door into an ad for their products.
Kinda like you doing your "reports" on your sponsor's boats and products.

There's a distinct difference between "XYZ Company donated $1,000,000
to improve salmon habitat in spawning rivers. (XYZ Company manufactures
the best selling widget in North America" and something that reads "Run
out and buy an XYZ widget. They're on sale this week at 20% off, and
you'll never want to own another brand of widget after using an XYZ."

From the broad perspective, I am *delighted* to see both you and Harry

suddenly so zealous about content in the NG. I guess you will both be
sticking pretty closely to topic from hereon, right? Certainly if news
about a company donating some big bucks to restore historic lighthouses
is inappropriate in a group organized around recreational boating,
personal attack and political posts must be even more egregiously
offensive.
