I'm looking for a compromise boat which seems to be an impossible task
leaving me with either (1) having a boat custom built which would be
ridiculous in terms of cost or (2) buying one or the other.

Try to find a good Hatteras 55 sportfish. That was the only sportfish
we looked at that also had truly decent cruising accomodations.
Unfortunately it was just a tad too big to fit comfortably on our
dock, and the fuel burn was up around 3 gals per mile with its 12V71
turbos.
