I picked up a 20lb bag of dog food at the supermarket the other day and was carrying it on my shoulder across the parking lot to my truck that was parked quite a ways from the entrance/exit. About halfway to the truck the bag was getting a bit heavy and it dawned on me that 2 months ago I was carrying the equivalent weight of the bag all the time. Eisboch |

Which is one reason I left Earthlink and set up my own server. It's nothing new. How does a mere mortal set up his own server? A number of different ways. One, you can do it on your own by putting up a dedicated server on your address, pay the fee for the domain name (like jiminfl.com) and get the URl propogated which takes about a week. At that point, you can move around, set up your own news feed, anything you want to do within the limits of your server. Or... You can set up with a company that provides web space like Lunarpages. Or... You can pay for unlimited access to Usenet using one of the news groups out there. I use Easynews as a feeder to my own domain - great deal and it works very well. Never had any downtime. Much too complicated for me to deal with. You lost me with propigating Urls, setting up news feeds, my server, web space. Have a Happy, Joyous, and Merry __________________ Jim |

Or you can just use google groups over the web for free.

AFAIK, there are only two ways to obtain USENET news.... an "IHAVE" feed, which you are going to have to pay some really big bucks for and is really for USENET servers that have lots of subscribers (you aren't going to want to go this way), or a "Dynamic Suck Feed", which is kinda like your newsreader on steroids. It is just a program, resident on your computer, that downloads USENET posts from 1 or more remote servers. (Actually, you set it up a lot like your own news reader.) Then..... and this is the only difference... your news reader downloads from *your* server rather than *theirs*. Now, I set up my own news server so that I could have incredibly configurable filtering when this newsgroup hit the wall a couple of years ago with the rep/dem/blue/red/he sucks/they suck posts. I also found it convenient that it merged the feeds of multiple servers. That is no longer required since I use a news client that will download from multiple servers, but I do keep the server running so I have access outside my ISP's local domain and for the filter attributes. If you are looking for better overall performance.... the easiest (by far) and cheapest way to go about that is to find a decent news provider. (Let them do all of the hard stuff.) This would be my personal recommendation..... $6.00/mo and reliable, rock solid service: http://www.usenet-access.com/ -- Grady-White Gulfstream, out of Oak Island, NC. Yea, but earthlink's news servers are out maybe 10 days a year so
during that time you can use google for free. The rest of the time you use earthlink for free. Or you can do what you did and spend hours of your own time settting stuff up and pay an additional monthly subscription for something most isp's include with your regular fee. I'll do the first. I found freetext.usenetserver.com It's read only, but I can live with that. It runs under Outlook Express so I don't have to reconfigure filters. If I want to post I can always go to Google to do my needleing or whatever. I hope you dont mind if I wish you a Merry Christmas. Jim |
