25 hp outboard engine disassembly of lower unit

Help! The Mr. has our 1983, 25 hp mercury outboard engine, lower unit
ALMOST dropped. Something is stopping the lower unit from coming off.
What is holding it on?

Not knowing a whole lot about Mercs, I'd say check to see if the shift
linkage is unhooked. That or the bottom bolt.

Depends on how far it dropped. The shifter has to be disconnected. If it
is like my 1986 Mariner, there is a connector nut in the middle. That can
be gotten to from a slot in the leg. If it does not drop at all, you may
have a corrosion problem on the powerhead to drife shaft connection. Then
you have to spray some PBBlaster or other good stuff in there and hope it
loosens the shaft and maybe some tapping on the leg with a wood block and
hammer. I broke the cavitation plate getting mine off. But Phil's Props is
Redding, Ca made it good again.

Shift rod? They have to be connected both ways.
