I'm trying to identify something that was sent to me, it's made of leather
and is filled with cork. A couple of people have mentioned that it might be
boating related so I thought that I would ask here and see if anyone
recognizes it. It's number 822 on this site:

Thanks for taking a look,
Rob

I'm going to say that it takes the place of a monkey's fist.

I don't know the purpose of a monkey's fist, but it turns out that the item
in question is a fender for a small boat, verified by three different
antique boat experts.

Just posted the answer page for the latest set, it has a couple of new
photos, some links and a little more info:

Cool, a monkey's fist is really just a clever knot making a clump of
rope. It's used to give mass to a line when you are trying to throw it
to shore.

A monkey's fist was /is the ball used on the end of a heaving line.
Ever watch big ships come in and longshoremen tie up?

Yup, and they used a shotgun rig with a large rubber ball on the end of the
shooting line.

Rob, that site is really interesting. I've been able to identify many
of the good pictures you have there. My Grandfathers barn is still
stuffed with many of those items and tools.

It's a great site.
Thanks.

Thanks for the comments, and also thanks to everyone else for the info on
the monkey's fist knot, I made one a couple years ago but didn't know it had
a purpose.
