Anybody got a hint as to how to do it? Nothing I've found on the web
is helpful at all.

Why not just format it with DOS? FreeDOS, maybe?

Now that I think about it, this might be a perfect opportunity to
install Linux - got any hints?

I am really beginning to hate Windows.

You mentioned ham stuff. I have no idea what your needs are, but here is
a list of Debian's ham stuff. Does it meet your needs?

I'm partial to Debian, but Ubuntu is a quite up to date Debian derivative.
You might want to try a Ubuntu LiveCD to see if you like it.

If you go with Debian, I would suggest the unstable release. It's quite
stable for most putzing around.

Or for a live CD:
