So how many do you have and how old are your...............
One son, 17, who only gets in the boat if he's guaranteed to catch fish. I
reminded him last year that if he spent a few hours taking the ABSOLUTELY FREE boat safety course, he could take his girlfriend out in the boat without his father. The brilliance of this idea hasn't sunken in yet. |

The brilliance of this idea hasn't sunken in yet. Did you teach him about the "water in the gas line" trick yet? Takes a couple of hours for it to work it's way out of the system. In the mean time... :) .....and only evaporation will work. :-) Unfortunately, he has legitimate ways of getting stranded. This past summer, he tossed a life jacket on top of the gas tank. OMC, in its infinite wisdom, designed the tank so the hose's latch mechanism faces up. Click....the hose popped out about 1/4". No leakage, and everything looks fine. The motor will start, but only run for 2 seconds. He did this at Tupper Lake in a stiff wind, which blew him into some mud. Now, the boat's stuck. Instead of using the oar like a pole, he tried rowing out. Broke one oar. Unfortunately, he was with two teenage guys who also couldn't come up with an exit strategy. Not a girl. |

" JimH" not telling you @ pffftt.com wrote in message ... .......kids? We have 2, both of which are hard core boating addicts. Our 21 year old is in her last year in college. She grew up on the water, loves boating, fishing and generally being on the water. I got her hooked on fishing when she was about 11 years old, spending the day taking perch off her line and rebaiting it......I think she caught (before limits) 50 yellow perch that day (we ate all of them). She never had any interest in operating our boats other than our inflatable. She continues to love the outdoors and nature and is dating a guy sharing the same interests. Our 18 year old in his first year in college. He also grew up on the water (since he was an infant). He is a licensed boat operator, taking (and passing) the Power Squadron classes last year. With my help he has piloted our 32 footer and now our 20 footer. He will be taking our boat out in his own next summer after some one on one training. He is a health nut and runs 3 miles at least 6 times/week. He also grew up on the water with us on our boats and has kept a high interest in boating. So how about yours................................? Based on the responses it looks like we have members here have families they deserve to be proud of. Way to go guys! |

We started w-a-a-a-a-a-y-y-y-y late and our one and only is a son aged almost 22. He's a great boater and quite a competent captain. I trusted him to act in a mature manner and put him at the helm when he was about 4 years old. He has acted as was expected of him (with supervision, where appropriate) and has always been a responsible boater. If *anybody* is catching fish... *he* is.... its always has been like that, even when he was just a little kid. (I'm jealous.) When time permits, he now serves as mate on a local head boat. He's going the way of Tom's kid and is majoring in Criminal Justice.... he has some pretty good prospects on the horizon pending graduation. Judging from some of our peer's kids... we've been lucky! -- Grady-White Gulfstream, out of Oak Island, NC. Homepage http://myworkshop.idleplay.net/ Rec.boats at Lee Yeaton's Bayguide http://www.thebayguide.com/rec.boats Like you I let my kids take the wheel while in my lap since they were young, but when sitting on my lap. When they were older and wanted to I allowed them to take the wheel but with me standing beside them and in only light traffic areas. With our smaller boat my son has taken the wheel on his own in light traffic areas, including in the river off the Lake and is growing more and more confident with his boating skills. |
