Hi Folks.
I live in California. Some idiot left a trashed boat on a trashed trailer in the street in front of my house today. This boat is in such bad shape, it was obviously a piece of garbage on someone's property, and instead of doing the responsible thing and dumping it legally, they dragged it to my house and left it here. The trailer is so rotten (including the tires, which are shredded and disintegrating) it's a wonder they even got it this far. I live in a rural area. Anyway, the only identifying marks on it are some numbers on the sides of the boat with what looks like a registration sticker next to them that says "California 86". Is there a way to find out from these numbers who owns this boat? Hopefully the police will have it hauled out of here, but I'm really sick of people dumping their trash on and around my property and this is the worst yet. I'd like to find out who did it. I suspect it's one of my neighbors... real neighborly thing to do, eh? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

If last registered in 1986, they may have purged the records by now. You have to fill out a form as to why you want the owner of record and I think it cost a buck. |

Lucky for you, this beast is on a trailer, and that trailer is a vehicle. The taxpayers will wind up paying to have your problem hauled to impound. |

If it's been in one of their yards for several years, there's a chance it'll show on Google Earth. My pickup shows up in front of my house. Good luck! |

Here, you register the trailer with the DMV, and the boat with the DNR. The boat registration for mine is $15 for three years. The trailer, with the DMV is another $15 or so a year. |

I can only see my pool and part of my house, the trees cover the rest. Wish they'd have taken the photos in the winter! |

My pickup shows up in front of my house. Good luck! Thanks for the suggestions. I tried Google Earth. Unfortunately, the boat has been stored under a tree, so it probably wouldn't show up in a satellite photo anyway. It's full of leaves (and beer cans), and this is a large area. By "neighbors", I meant someone who lives in the general vicinity, not necessarily next door. It had to be someone from nearby, because the trailer is so bad that dragging it for any distance would draw tons of attention. The wheels consist of a few shreds of rubber hanging off badly twisted rims. I didn't know that boats were registered with the DMV...I'll definitely be making a trip there to try to find out who the owner is/was. All I need is an address, since I actually saw the truck that towed the boat to where it is. As I pulled into my driveway, they were just finishing unhooking it, and they took off in a hurry when they saw me. Had I realized what was happening, I could have followed them, but it took a minute to register, and they got away in the meantime. Anyway, if I find that truck at the address of the registered owner of the boat, I got 'em! I called the CHP; they said they'd come out and check it out, but it's still there this morning. This road is a heavily used bicycle route, and the boat is completely blocking the bike lane. Plus, cars regularly drive 60 to 70 mph on this road, so the boat's presence, forcing bikers out of the bike lane and into the road, is a very dangerous situation. I hope it doesn't take a horrible accident to convince the cops to have this beast impounded. |

DMV registers all vehicles. Only if it is under about 16' and no motor is it not registered. We have permanent trailer tags. $20 for 5 years. Only in California is permanent 5 years. And the boat is $15 for two years and the county tax assessor sends you a bill for 2% of the value each year. |

ps.com: Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks. Call the cops and tell them you think someone dumped a STOLEN KEYWORD boat in front of your house. They'll come get the "evidence" or send a tow truck and you're rid of the problem....free! -- There's amazing intelligence in the Universe. You can tell because none of them ever called Earth. |
