Hi Folks.

I live in California. Some idiot left a trashed boat on a trashed
trailer in the street in front of my house today. This boat is in such
bad shape, it was obviously a piece of garbage on someone's property,
and instead of doing the responsible thing and dumping it legally, they
dragged it to my house and left it here. The trailer is so rotten
(including the tires, which are shredded and disintegrating) it's a
wonder they even got it this far. I live in a rural area.

Anyway, the only identifying marks on it are some numbers on the sides
of the boat with what looks like a registration sticker next to them
that says "California 86". Is there a way to find out from these
numbers who owns this boat? Hopefully the police will have it hauled
out of here, but I'm really sick of people dumping their trash on and
around my property and this is the worst yet. I'd like to find out who
did it. I suspect it's one of my neighbors... real neighborly thing to
do, eh?

Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Harry, is that you? :^)

Contact the DMV. The numbers on the side of the boat are the
registration
numbers. If last registered in 1986, they may have purged the records by
now. You have to fill out a form as to why you want the owner of record
and
I think it cost a buck.

The DMV registers boats in CA? Here, you register the trailer with the
DMV, and the boat with the DNR. The boat registration for mine is $15
for three years. The trailer, with the DMV is another $15 or so a year.

DMV registers all vehicles. Only if it is under about 16' and no motor is
it not registered. We have permanent trailer tags. $20 for 5 years. Only
in California is permanent 5 years. And the boat is $15 for two years and
the county tax assessor sends you a bill for 2% of the value each year.

Here you only register the trailer with DMV. The boat is registered
through the Dept. of Natural Resources, $15 for three years. NO ad
valorum tax.

They do not tax cheap boats here either.
