Do Harleys come from the factory with noise levels that are illegal, or do
most owners modify them to be that way?

Some modify them with illegal mufflers. A few completely remove the
mufflers and run straight pipes.
Many remove the stock mufflers and install louder, but still legal mufflers
(slip-ons). All in all though, a Harley, even modified, isn't nearly as
loud as some of the custom bikes with S&S engines.

I recently changed mine back to the stock, quiet mufflers since I don't ride
in Florida anymore, the land of sound proof Lincoln TownCars driven by sweet
but oblivious little old ladies.

(with apologies to JiminFl :-) )

The new bikes are more difficult to mess with because they have catalytic
converters and must pass emissions tests. Or, I should say, are *supposed*
to pass emission tests.

What Eisboch said, although I think most of the very loud ones are running
straight pipes. I wish the cops would start stopping and noise testing
them, but I guess they've got better things to do.

Yeah. Society is threatened by donuts. Somebody's gotta arrest them all. We
had a guy in my neighborhood who went to work at 4:00 AM on his Harley, and
couldn't see fit to idle the stupid thing as he left the neighborhood. He
woke up every house he passed. We eventually got the cops to fix him. I
don't know what they said to him, but from that point on, it seemed like he
coasted with the engine off. Then, his girlfriend threw his dumb ass out of
the house.

I am not a little old lady, but I prefer to be oblivious to vehicles that
are better at making noise than horsepower. Harleys , with their potato-
potato noise are bad but not as objectionable as the honda civics running
around at near red line that sound like sick sewing machines, or the kids
that cant keep their fenders and my head from rattling while they feel their
"music". Thanks for toning down your pipes.
Jim

Good on ya!

I'm a motorcyclist and realize the damage loud pipes do to the attitude
towards us.

Had a neighbor some years ago, that was hired as the President of a company
that manufactured mufflers and other parts for Harleys. Wife was saying
that she got scared shortly afterwards as they were by a biker bar and hubby
was checking out the scooters. When asked what he was doing by a couple of
the bikers and he explained he was head of company making Harley
accessories, expecially mufflers, he was treated like a god.

If you take up coasting with the engine off, there are a lot of women
who would find that less than satisfactory and would do just as his
girlfriend did.
