Slop in steering wheel, not outdrive... help ;)

I have a '94 Chaparral. I was cruising the past few times and have notice
ALOT of play/slop in the steering. When I was troubleshooting witht he boat
out of the water, the out drive really doesn' thave much play in it. the
steering wheel seems to have all the play. What is the best way to trouble
shoot? Most common causes and expensiveness of them? I've had the boat for
about 5 years and no steering work has been done, but alwyas had minor slop
not much.

THanks!

Look at the cable when someone turns the wheel. May be as simple as the
bracket that holds the end of the cable housing has come loose. Could be
the steering box. Get under the dash and look.
