Bubbled slip for winter- what needs to be done?
 

I am in Chicago and always have my boat hauled out and winterized. I
found a slip with water/electric for the same $$ as winter storage. If
I take that and drain the water lines and a/c line, will the engine be
okay? Can I put a light bulb or something in the engine compartment
or does it need to be winterized? I can go over there and start the
engine if needed. I doubt I would be able to use the boat as much of
the river outside this marina does freeze over.

If I wanted to use the boat (like to sleep there), is there any way I
can still use the water system given the freeing temperatures?

You should still winterize the engine(s), all water systems and water cooled
genset if you have one.

There are block heaters that you can attach to the oil pan that will keep
the engine temp above freezing, but they require power which may be lost
during storms.

I left my boat in the water last winter and am going to do it again this
winter. (Cape Cod MA). All systems and engines were winterized and all sea
cocks were closed. Everything was fine and I actually enjoyed being on the
boat a couple of times during the dead of winter ... once during a
snowstorm. I used 1500 watt space heaters when I was aboard and was
surprised at how comfortable it was, temperature wise. For water, I just
bought several one and two gallon jugs for coffee, cold sponge baths and
shaving. Fortunately, the marina I am at has heated restrooms and showers
nearby that are open all winter.

One benefit is that you can wait a bit longer before doing the winterizing
.... mine will be done the first week of December, so you can extend the use
of the boat. Staying on the boat for a few days in February is very
different and enjoyable.
