So many choices.............Berkley, Daiwa, Spiderline,
Shakespeare............the list goes on.

Never had a problem with Stren.

I've used them all. My current favorite in flororcarbon. Don't remember
which one. Too lazy to go look.

Here's a good time to ask for opinions.

I used to fish quite a bit when I was a teenager. Mostly in a resevoir in CT
(illegally...got chased by the game warden a few times g), and local
streams, etc. I never paid much attention to what was on the reel. Now being
a relatively new boat owner (4+ years) with a 6 year old son on board, I'm
finally enjoying fishing once again. Now the line question...does it really
matter (don't shoot me)? Right now we mainly troll for large mouth bass in a
local lake, and I believe I have mono (6-8#) on all the reels. We have
fairly good success. Is there something better? I never really paid much
attention to the line, but this thread begged me to ask.

I agree with Harry: mono on the spool so the Fireline won't slip and a
fluorocarbon leader. Use the setup for walleye in Canada and Saginaw Bay
(MI).

For heavier setups (e.g., Dipsey Divers, downrigger rods, etc.) I use an
abraision-resistant mono.

I use mono, just because I like the feel when fishing finnicky bass. I
like Stren but mostly use Bass Pro's line.

If you are fishing heavy cover, for example, you want a heavy line or
a hybrid braid for strength and abrasion resistance. Same with big
game fishing, only in that case you might want to switch to steel
leaders, etc.

It's really a game of confidence. For me, it's a game of color. I
tend to use yellow, green and blue lines in the 12/17 # range for
fresh and 17/20 # range in the same color patterns for general
sal****er fishing. That can change depending on species.

So there are reasons for different weights, different types and
different colors. Take me for instance. I use different colors for
my own peace of mind than any scientific reason. I have good luck
with yellow lines in stained water for example, green for average
color and blue for clear water. I use fluorocarbon leaders that I
make up in different lengths. Etc., etc., etc. :)

Depending on what you have confidence in of course. Confidence is a
big component of fishing. I don't like spinner baits for example and
don't have a great deal of success with them for large mouth or small
mouth bass, but I have a great deal of success with spoons where the
average fisherman won't even look at a spoon lure.

For the average guy who gets out once in a while with his 6 year old
putting around looking for largemouth, 6-8# mono is just fine - no
reason to experiment.

I line my spinning and casting reels with enough mono to cover the spool,
then I wind on a spool of Berkley Fireline. I've gotten away from using
mono as working line. I tie on a leader of fluorocarbon.

Same hear. But I use Calcutta braid. I really like the Calcutta over the
PowerPro. It's cheaper, and I haven't had the failures I've seen in
PowerPro.

For my trolling rod (dolphin, billfish, tuna, wahoo, etc), I use hi-vis
Momoi Diamond 30 lb. test on a Tiagra 30 2-speed. The stretch in the line
helps absorb some of the shock of a hard-hitting fish. I've had hooks
break, straighten, and/or pull when using braid while trolling.

But when I'm bottom fishing, I like the zero-stretch braids.
