Default Marcruiser Harmonic Balancer

Hi all,

Had the boat out last weekend and it made a metal thunking noise at low
RPM.
Further investigation revealed the balancer is shot. The rubber
between the counterweight and the hub was lying in the bilge.
The engine is a 5.7 lt Mercruiser with a 2 bl carb.
A replacement balancer is $175. Ouch!
So the questions a
Can a automotive balancer work?
What about the guys who claim to rebuild balancers? Any one had luck
with those?

Any help would be great.
Thanks.
