According to the CG press release, the accident occured at 0515. This
time of year it is still pitch dark in these latitudes.

Considering, however, that the boat in question was undoubtedly
equipped with radar, gps, a plotter and forward scanning sonar......in
addition to the obvious "if all else fails check the buoys and
beacons......." it's surprising that they misjudged the channel in the
dark. Looks like they only missed it by 10 feet, maybe less at a higher
tide, but 10 feet is 10 feet too many.

Porbably a combination of darkness, overconfidence (I"ve been through
here 100 times!"), and maybe fatigue as they were heading back in.

Cripes....I have a 14' yacht, but I still have one of those big-ass search
lights. Comes in handy at least 2-3 times each season.

Conversations recorded near the boat and just released today:

Transcript:

0516: Husband talking to wife: "What do you mean you did not renew the
boat insurance policy!"

0517: Husband on the cell phone: "Hello, Boat/US, do you insure boats that
our out of the water?"
