boat hunting later this year

Teh wife and I had a blast ont he lake Labor Day. and really enjoyed
the time. Long and drawn out. plenty of cooking. I got her on (as Clams
says) "The Tube of Resolve" .. bounced her around pretty good too!

She had fun and was loaded up on Tylanol before she got into the water
;)

Anyhow, we got to talking about our present boating situation, and
seeing we're both 50 we decided we're getting a bit old for the typical
boating frolic. And even though we like our little 4 cyl. CCraft
Scporpion 169, it's getting a bit cramped.

So, I decided that this winter when you start to see prices of boats
drop because the season is out, I'm either going to look for a 21-23
footer preferably a non-cuddy, either that or I'm going to take up the
notion of a 26-28 ft. pontoon. Wife and I both agree that we need some
sun shade. She would just as soon enjoy the day on the water by
reading a book (?) under a decent bimini or, if a pontoon canopy or
solid top.

And a pontoon would be eiser to entertain guests, especuially as our
extended family grows.

River cruised will probably be more fun as well.

Keep the little Chris? probably, or If my oldest nephew wants it (
acttually, he loves it!) make him a great deal on it.

Anyhow, in a couple months I'm gonna start looking.

As long as the pontoon boat has a private area for a porta potty, and as
long as you will do all your boating on a river or other protected waters, I
would go with the pontoon boat.

agreed.

a pontoon can be easily decked out the way one wants it. I've seen one
that was all open air (no cabin) with a shower in the back for hosing
off river water, fed by a 15 gal air pressured water tank. grills
mounted on the front is always popular.A friend of mine has his
pontoon's set up with mosquito netting surrounding his hard top,for
camping out in the lake when the bugs present themselves.. Just roll it
down and zip up the corners.

My favorite lake is fairly choppy when it's a bit breezy, when when its
a calm day, the water's pretty calm too.
We're neither one much partial to the pillowy furniture. I've seen
some that were so decked out with furniture, that you seemed to have
less room in it than my boat! my son had a 24 ft. pontoon with a 40 hp
merc. and when he got it, it was just a plain deck. it had a new floor
and some quality carpet, but that was it. the guy lost interest and
sold it very reasonably. His wife said,' What are we going to do for
furniture"? He said "No problem. a $10.00 garage sale fold-out couch,
a card table, cooler, and some folding chairs"! she wasn't happy to
start with, but we're talking budget boating.... She ended up getting
used to the idea and they had a blast with it.

I don't think I would go to that extreme, though. But it would be nice
to have something not necessarily new, but comfortable.

We added a small 20ft pontoon to go with our runnabout. It is mainly
setup for fishing with chairs in every corner, but does have a lounge
actoss from the helm. The wife likes it since it is so roomy and easy to
get on and off with the little doors.

Seems like all the pontoons we saw had pretty impressive bimin's as
standard. Ours covers about 7 foot toward the rear of the boat over the
helm and lounge area.. Very nice for just wondering around.

exactly, Jack. I've seen them with the bimini's but I'm kind of liking
the idea of a tractable hard top myself. you can angle them back,
straight up, and even forward , how ever it suits your needs. when
ready to trailor home, you simply lay it forward and down.

That's not a bad idea, though, to have them both!

Looks like a pontoon boat gives you a lot of options on how it is set up.
We rented on several years back on an inland lake and had a blast on it.

Not for me - I still miss my little 21 ft cuddy. It was a fun boat and
the cuddy can him handy :-) 10 years of trouble free operation too!
