Johnson 4hp throttle cable

Greetings to all - I am a new member here. I've searched the archive
for this without success. I recently aquired a Johnson 4hp two-stroke
outboard, about ten years old but used for only a few hours at most, it
was a get-you-home engine that was never actually needed.
The throttle cable is causing problems. First, the threaded plastic
part at the engine end, where you presumably adjust the tickover
position with the two clamping nuts, broke - I was able to glue it
together temporarily. Now, the L-shaped metal piece at the engine end
of the cable keeps popping out of the clip on the timing disk, which
clip also seems to have opened itself up, - the whole design seems very
flimsy and failure-prone therefore someone must surely have had this
problem before. I have ordered a new throttle cable, but pending its
arrival I would welcome any advice from anybody with similar
experiences, maybe there's a well-known fix? For now, I have McGyvered
it with a cable tie but it's not a long-term solution.
