I joined this group as i thought I might learn something about boats
but all I see is petty bickering, foul language and outright racism. All this stuff I don't need to hear about so I am out of here. Too bad there are no moderators to keep this stuff out. I wonder how many others have left cause of these problems as well. Rob |

![]() drake wrote: I joined this group as i thought I might learn something about boats Sorry that your dozens of questions were ignored by the participants here. but all I see is petty bickering, foul language and outright racism. Most of the racism is cross posted from other groups. We have one or more rec.boats participants who frequent some of those boards, and the garbage sort of sticks to their shoes. Petty bickering and foul language? Yeah- but you should have seen us last year. If all you can see is the negative stuff, you aren't looking very hard. All this stuff I don't need to hear about so I am out of here. G'bye. Too bad there are no moderators to keep this stuff out. I wonder how many others have left cause of these problems as well. Hundreds over the years. There are a couple of moderated sites you might enjoy. They don't allow any political statements (unless they agree with the moderator's point of view) and they tend to be commercial fronts for specific products and services.....(just try to post something negative about a towing service, etc, on some of them)....but you won't see much name calling. Good luck |

Rob Hmmmmm........just goes to show how people perceive things differently, I was just going to post about how friendly, civil, and helpful this group seems to be. I've only been lurking a few months, but if you want to see foul language, petty bickering, and outright racism, you should check into a couple of the "musical" groups I subscribe to (I'm a weekend musician)..........would make this group seem tame by comparison. But everyone has their own opinions, and should be respected for them......just my observations. Thanks |

That is absolutely true for the most part. There are maybe half a dozen "Kill File" candidates, and after they have been properly dispatched, the rest of the group looks fairly good these days. Reasonable questions usually get a bunch of good answers. |

Rob I see you use Mozilla as your news reader. When you see each subject, are you also seeing all the replies automatically, or are they collapsed until you expand them? |

Rob You don't have to read everything written. When the material is off topic, or becomes off topic, you don't have to read the material. When the material is on topic you can read the material to your hearts content. I am a rookie powerboat owner and have gained a lifetime of boating-related knowledge from this group over the last year. The choice is yours. I agree that the ****ing and moaning and name calling are a real disappointment, but the boating discussions are invaluable. Even the ****ers and moaners and name callers have useful contributions when they are discussing boating. Good luck with your choice and if you find a better interactive resource, shout it out. |

I joined this group Well, there is no "joining" of this group - it is a freely available open Public, unmoderated Usenet newgroup that doen't require anyone to "join", Too bad there are no moderators to keep this stuff out. Too bad for you maybe. Look it, public, unmoderated Usenet newsgroups are not for everyone - thats why there is so many non-public, private forums out there. Please don't bag on open, unmoderated Usenet groups just because it doesn't suit your needs. Remember, information generated from these open Usenet forums are the basis for the data used in 'Google searches'. So down the road when you google-search "how do I ..." you may be drawing on information that was generated from a open, public Usenet newsgroup. I wonder how many others have left cause of these problems as well. Probably a few. Again, public Usenet newsgroups arn't always for the faint of heart - some have more thin skin than others. Thats why people start private forums. Personally, I think the public ones have more information simply because they reach a wider audiance. I'm not saying that its "bad" that you may have thiner skin than the next guy or whatever, just putting it into perspective for you, thats all (and trying to understand why you are "announcing" that you are leaving a public Usenet newsgroup - were you expecting to change the public or something ?) I agree with Mr Wizard. I don't have the time to sort through it all
with a large portion of it being negative. And who ever put that post about the Annapolis student on this site was just wrong whether it was trash on his shoe or not. I signed up for the e-mail alerts so I could read about everything boating not to read the bullying that usually takes place. The Langley subject was great by the way and I will probably head across the sound and check it out. I just think that if people are getting off the subject or razzing someone they should try a different venue. In the words of G Bush Sr as done by Dana Carvey on SNL, Boating posts good, Negative posts Bad, Bad. George is a fishman too. Fishes out of a Fountain.
