What is the longest...............

I skipped the 386. Went straight from a Pal 286 running GeoWorks to a
486 with Windows and a blazingly fast 1200 baud modem. The Pal had an 8
Mhz clockspeed with a "turbo" button that would boost it up to 12 Mhz.
40 MB hard drive.

Tandy or Commodore?

Neither. It was manufactured by Laser Computer and was commonly referred to
as a "Pal" 286. It was distributed here by Lechmere, a now defunct New
England retail store chain.
It was a fully integrated computer ... internal 42MB hard drive, floppy disk
drives (both 5 1/4 and 3 1/2-inch), internal modem with telephone jacks, a
printer port, two serial ports, mouse port and game port. List price in
1990-91 was $1,995.00, including a 13 inch "high resolution" VGA monitor.

To think ... it had 640K of conventional memory, 384K of extended memory and
a whole megabyte of RAM, expandable to 4 MB. Pretty high tech for it's
day.

Yes indeed, I resisted changing for a loooong time. Do you remember
Firesock from Trumpet Software? You really needed that with 3.1 as I
recall.

It got down-right nasty at times. It was when I was first getting into
newsgroups, using an IBM thinkpad with Windows--gosh, it might have still
been Windows 3.1--it was around 95 or 96 or 97--I know it was before 98,
because it was before my previous employer dumped my whole department.

Agreed, Windows for Workgroups, 3.1. They should never have changed it.
