Need advice on engine coupler
I have a 2002 Stingray 240cs with a 5l Mercruiser and Alpha one
outdrive. I'm pretty sure the engine coupler is spun. Does the engine have to come out to replace this? or can I do it in place? |

sorry but the engine has to come out to do this, as well as your wallet

It's all labor costs, the part is a $100 or so. The engine just has to
be lifted enough to get the bellhousing off. So it doesn't really have to come totally out on the ground but everything has to be disconnected just as if it was. If there is really a lot of working space you might get it off by just lifting the engine a little but I really doubt it. I would suspect the prop hub before the engine coupler. They use the same coupler on all of them and the 5l is not as powerful as the 5.7. Alignment issues can cause it though. What makes you think it is the engine coupler? If it is make sure it is aligned correctly after put back together. And have the alignment checked again later. seeray28(steve) wrote: sorry but the engine has to come out to do this, as well as your wallet "John Chaplain" wrote in message ... Engine doesn't have to come out if you can slide it fwd 6 inches or so.

That would be plenty. Most of the boats in that size range I've looked
at have the engine partially below the floor line and seldom have much space in front of the flywheel. If the boat had a big block as an option there may be a little more room. It's certainly something I'd try to do if I thought it was possible. Jim wrote: Engine doesn't have to come out if you can slide it fwd 6 inches or so. You will need to pull the engine to replace the coupler but that is not a
major task if you have access to an overhead hoist. Don Dando "John Chaplain" wrote in message ... I have a 2002 Stingray 240cs with a 5l Mercruiser and Alpha one outdrive. I'm pretty sure the engine coupler is spun. Does the engine have to come out to replace this? or can I do it in place? |

Thanks for the input folks,
I did replace the coupler. I rented an engine hoist and lifted the engine about a foot and swung it sideways and replaced the coupler. About a 2 day job in all done in my driveway. Could probably do it again in a day in the right conditions, but it was a bitch of a job to do in 100 degree heat. What happened is that the engine lost alignment due to a jacking screw backing off. I'll be sure to never let THAT happen again. John C. That's good news. I supose that's an argument for the annual alignment
check. Which I'm guilty of not doing myself. John Chaplain wrote: Thanks for the input folks, I did replace the coupler.
