PFD's (lifejackets) and Dogs
 

I'm thinking of getting a pfd for my lab. What I need it for most is to
haul the beast out of the water onto the swim platform. She's a lab so
swimming is not a problem.

Before I spend $30 I just wanted to know what you think if you've done this.

We always used one for our Lab. Like you said, it makes a great way to get
them back in the boat. Well worth the $30.

We always used one for our Lab. Like you said, it makes a great way to get
them back in the boat. Well worth the $30.

My dog thinks he walks on water.
Once while towing a friend's boat thru the Ballard locks from the Puget
Sound side while tied up to the lock wall, he decided to abandon ship
after a duck, I didn't realize it till I heard the laughter from the
"lookie loos" above me. "look at that dog!" I turned to see my dog wash
out the locks with the current, I was lucky I knew the lock tenders,
They let me break my tow to go get my dog.
Now I tie him up everytime I transit the locks, Typical Chesapeake Bay
Retriever.

I have a virtually non-swimming bulldog mix (after a couple years in
the pool he is getting better)
We found the best life jacket is the foam type that wraps around the
belly and they step into. The ones that strap over the back didn't
keep his face out of the water,
Since your dog swims you might just need a harness but if you really
want bouyancy the "under the belly" model is better and it does cradle
them when you are hauling them aboard

So far I've only seen the kind that strap under the belly with velcro wraps.
I tried that on my dog today and she wouldn't budge; wouldn't sit, come,
turn her head, nothing. I don't know what she was thinking, but she sure
must not have liked it.

Made me think about just harness for my needs, but I know the extra bouyancy
of a pfd would keep her from wearing out fast.

It will be our second liver & white male Springer. The first died at age
7. He had some kind of skin allergy that required constant steroid
treatment.
After that we had a black & white American Cocker Spaniel that ran out
and got run over.
I sure home this guy stays healthy. I wouldn't want to be forced to
sell my boat to help keep our vet in the style he's become accustomed to!
