Been doing any striper fishing up there lately? Being in the 90's here,
with water temps up, you have to find stripers by trolling known DEEP
structure. They aren't coming up much for top water baitfish, unless
you are out in the main lake. I'm going out this weekend for our
excellent spotted bass. They claim that because of the introduction of
blue back herring into the lake, that the next record spotted bass will
probably come from Lanier. You can see the difference in a couple of
years, they are SO fat. Shaw Grigsby loves coming to Lanier for the
spots. When I'm there, I may downline some shiners in the afternoon and
try the striper bite.

I've not been fishing yet this year!

Fishing in the bay, from what I hear, is not going all that well this year.
The stripers came and left early, due to the warm winter, and the rain has
dirtied the bay pretty badly.

My new hobby is golf. I started last year, and it's taken much of the
fishing time away. Golf, fishing, and motorcycling are not hobbies that get
along well together!

I've never gotten into golf much. I got a set, and went to the driving
range some, and never got good enough at it to even go to a course. Did
you take lessons or what?

I chase little balls there all the time! Yesterday I came home with two
ticks crawling around on my body.

First I read a book. Then I practiced what the book said. The book is "Five
Lessons The Modern Fundamentals of Golf" by Ben Hogan. I read it, and read
it again, and go back to it a lot.

I took a five lesson package from a local pro, which helped. I play with a
guy who shoots in the mid-80's, and get tips from him. I practice with an
old club hitting pennies on my concrete driveway. I figure if I can make a
penny go somewhere, I must be doing something right.

Golf takes practice. Amen. It is the most challenging sport I've ever
played. It's all up to the individual, no other players or refs to blame.

And, it's more exercise than walking on water while fishing, which I'm
close to but not yet there!

A friend who's been playing for many years gave my son a used set of clubs,
and took him out to play 3 times. The kid's never done anything but futz
around at a driving range, or play miniature golf with an ice cream cone in
one hand, but he shot 88, 84 and 83 in the 3 games! My friend was
flabbergasted. Now, my son wants to take me out so he can humble another
adult. He seems to be a natural.

Kids are flexible flyers and take to golf very naturally. It's us less
flexible, older types that have the problems.
I've tried it. Tried it again. Tried once more. Gave it up for life.

There was a seven year old on the news the other night. She was swinging a
45" (full size) driver and hitting the target every time. She would then
switch and do the same thing left-handed. The driver was longer than she
was tall!

If he scored that well on a regular 18-hole course, I'd get him some clubs
and encourage him all I could. Many colleges have golf teams!

Right now I'm excited at the improvement I see in myself. One thing that
has definitely made the game more interesting is playing on different
courses. I've got the local course to fall back on, but we go to at least
one new course every week. One course, General's Ridge in Manassas, is so
hard that I'll not go back until I'm shooting in the low 90's, which may
not occur until *I'm* in my low 90's!
