I found out the cause of my overheating........
The marina replaced the impeller, lower unit pump and thermostat on the boat
yesterday. Out of 12 blades on the impeller, 3 were totally gone, 3 were half gone and the remainder had cuts and nicks on the ends. This was not damage that happened in one day but it certainly caused my overheating on July 1st. If the marina replaced the impeller when I asked them to earlier this season I would never have had the overheating problem. I will let them slide on this one but will make sure it the impeller is replaced every 2 years in spring prior to launch. No sense monkeying around with a $40 part. After I installed the VHF radio and antenna on the boat today I took it out for a test run. It runs good and the temperature did not go above 155 even at WOT or low idle. So far it looks like the engine or risers did not suffer any damage and I may have dodged a bullet this time. With sunny skies and temperatures in the 80's forecast for this weekend, combined with light southerly winds (meaning a flat Lake) we will be on the boat both Saturday and Sunday. My daughter came home for the weekend and will be joining us, making it even more special. Maybe our string of bad luck has ended.......most likely due to good Karma according to some. ;-) |

Good show, Jim.
well, that's one hassle out of the way. What was causing the rough running? Or, did they say? JimH wrote: The marina replaced the impeller, lower unit pump and thermostat on the boat yesterday. Wonder if they ever charged you for that service they didn't perform? Nope. And I found out how the "diagnosed" the impeller to come to the conclusion I did not need to replace it................they ran the engine for an hour, including a spin out on the Lake and watched the temperature gauge. I am only going to use these guys for basic maintenance and repair, and I will be replacing the impeller myself in the future just before Spring launch. I no longer have any confidence in their mechanical abilities. As a side note.........my Volvo repair manual says the engine takes a 160F thermostat and that is what I installed in spring. The mechanic who worked on my boat says it takes a 140F thermostat and that is what he installed. The engine is a 1997 Volvo Penta 4.3L with an SX outdrive. Will running the wrong thermostat temp have a negative effect on the engine's performance? |

Ok. Pre combustion "dieseling". That makes sense. I'm glad there
wasn't any further damage due to the over heat. JimH wrote: wrote in message ups.com... Good show, Jim. well, that's one hassle out of the way. Thanks! What was causing the rough running? Or, did they say? The overheating itself caused it, at least according to them. |

Glad it wasn't serious, but I'd sure be looking at replacing the manifolds and risers before it becomes something serious in a boat nigh on ten years old. -- John H ****************************************** ***** Have a Spectacular Day! ***** ****************************************** |
