Based on your explanation, and the fact that the boat was outside for a while, it's probably nothing more than dirt and grime you are removing. Any boat sitting for a while will oxidize a little - all you are doing is removing the crap to get to the gelcoat. In particular with a black hull. Get a good wash agent, nothing more than that - no wash and wax, then use a good paste wax and things will be fine. Or have it detailed. You can even call me a dummy cause I sure feel like one!!! Never say that in this newsgroup - it will come back to haunt you. :) Geee Shortwave we are all experts here :-) Now lets fight about the wax to use hehehe.. Try Zymol - just work on the effected area and don't leave it on to long. Or it gets hard to get off. Good luck - I am sure no harm was done as well.. Capt Jack R.. |

On 21 Jun 2006 10:49:00 -0700, supsand penned the following well considered thoughts to the readers of rec.boats: My first mistake was getting advice from the clerk at West Marine (young enough to be my kid). Now I'm trying here because it does seem there are many knowledgable folks on the subject. First-hand experience is usually some of the best. Believe me I won't do anything more until I fully understand the process. Ok.... let's cut to the chase. As willing as ALL of us are to give you the best advice possible, we'd be lying if we told you we know exactly what to do. Best advice, I think, at this point, is to call a local person/company that does boat detailing and cry, "help." Have them advise you on how to repair AND maintain the boat. You are concerned.... and you need help. A local set of eyes and expertise in gel coat maintenance/repair will be invaluable. It might be a REALLY cheap service call for the benefits that you receive..... Gene, Excellent advice. -- Reggie That's my story and I am sticking to it! |

"supsand" wrote in message oups.com... Thanks to everyone for trying to help. I probably made it sound worse than it is but you can tell close up that the finish is dull with small scratches and not jet black shiny like the rest of the boat. I'll get local advice. I probably just used the wrong wax. Without getting into a best wax debate are the ones mentioned (Zynol, Poliglow, Collinite) easy to find -- like at a local West Marine -- or through the internet? I've used Poliglow with good results. And, you should be able to pick it up at West Marine for under $1200.00 per container. :-) |

I'm a girl so don't think I'm gay ..... not that there's anything wrong with that! :-) |

That's why boats are known as holes in the water, into which you pour money. |

It's probably a LOT more than an equivalent size container of wax at an auto supply store. |
