merc 5.7L ski wont start
 

hi,
the engine will turn over and if i spray carb cleaner in it will run
for a few seconds, so i replaced fuel pump (OEM $200 from local dealer
-- grrrrrr), and the fuel filter. i tried starting again about 6 - 8
times spraying carb cleaner in and it will run but dies-- still no
fuel coming into carb. i pulled off fuel filter and noticed it is
about half full of fuel. do i need to keep trying to just keep trying
to start it? maybe the system is not full of fuel yet? it just seem
like it should have charged by now...

am i missing something?

any help appreciated...

Possibly the carb is plugged up from old gas plugging off the needle
valve?

or theres something restricting the fuel line from the carb tot he tank

what do you think i should do? should i unhook the line from the fuel
pump to the carb and blow air through it? how should i unstick the
needle value? (the carb is a almost new Holley)...

Yes.



What I would do is disconnect the coil or electronic ignition so you
don't ahve a chance of sparks. Then disconnect the fuel line that
attach's to the inlet side of the fuel pump and see if you have a good
natural fuel flow. if not? then there's a restriction in the line. If
that's the case, then use moderate pressure with an air gun and see if
you can blow back the clog. If it is stipped up, it should break loose
rather easily.

if the line is free, then hook back up to the pump and disconnect the
fuel line to the filter, that is, assuming you have the filter between
the pump and the carb. Cycle the engine over a few times and see if
you have a generous supply of fuel spurting from the outlet side of the
pump, or filter. reconnect, THEN investgate the Carb.

I really don't know much about Carbs, but you might look in Google.

Just thought of another thing. If you DO suspect the carb, then
something easier wwould be to call Van's Electric in Indianapolis. They
used to be called Vans Carburetor and Electric But still do tons of
carb work. They've also been a Holley dealer since the early 60's.

Ask for Steve Kelshaw


Be prepared with all your info. Application, and carb number[s]

They will give you good advice and won't steer you wrong.

are you sure there's fuel in the tank? Maybe your fuel gauge isn't correct?
I would run a fuel hose from the pump suction and stick it in a gas can to
see if the engine then starts. Shouldn't take much more than 30 seconds of
cranking to pull fuel up.
