It seems that most boat manufacturers have standardized on the starboard transom. Stand behind your boat and look to the right of the engine, near the edge of the transom and above the water line. Sometimes the numbers are hard to see as they are stamped into the fiberglass with no color difference. RCE |

It seems that most boat manufacturers have standardized on the starboard transom. Stand behind your boat and look to the right of the engine, near the edge of the transom and above the water line. Sometimes the numbers are hard to see as they are stamped into the fiberglass with no color difference. Usually they are on the starboard transom, but sometimes they will be on the starboard side of an integrated swim platform as well. If there is swim platform on the boat, look above it, on the edge of it, and under it on the starboard side. It should be there somewhere. This assumes that the Hurricane is a fiberglass boat. If it's an aluminum boat, I have no idea where it is, but would guess it's also somewhere near the starboard transom, probably with some sort of tag fastened to the hull or decking. |

It doesn't look like it's got any 3D relief to it. I also wonder if maybe the plate has gone missing. Not sure how anyone could have missed anything that obvious. |

RCE That has been the experience with each boat I have owned........it was always imprinted in the gelcoat and always on the starboard side on the transom. That method is not tamperproof as on can easily grind out the numbers, re-gelcoat and imprint a new number in the new gelcoat. ;-) |

The numbers should be stamped into the plate. If so, it's possible to get a rubbing by pressing very lightly with the pencil. Even the smallest depression will show up with a careful enough technique. I'd be reluctant to buy a boat with a missing HIN. Theoretically, the plate isn't supposed to be removable without doing some serious damage to the hull.....but I wouldn't be easily convinced that's the case by looking at the plate in the photo. Almost looks like its held on with pop rivets. (!) |

Had to move it from my driveway..out on street & back twice for 32 cu yd and 14 cu yd dumpsters and again today for delivery of building supplies for my new 6' x 12' shed. Street is very narrow and usually has cars on both sides. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...angerPiper.jpg |

Thanks. -- 'Til next time, John H Can't wait to show off my new custom galvanized boat trailer. The frame has been fabricated in Ottawa, the local guy will drive up to pick it up with others, come here to Halifax for hot dipped galvanizing treatment, and then transport to his shop 150 miles north east of here for assembly. Hopefully I'll have it by the end of the month. New truck, new trailer & creampuff 20 yr old boat. I should be looking good at the launch ramps! |
