It seems that most boat manufacturers have standardized on the starboard
transom. Stand behind your boat and look to the right of the engine, near
the edge of the transom and above the water line. Sometimes the numbers are
hard to see as they are stamped into the fiberglass with no color
difference.

Usually they are on the starboard transom, but sometimes they will be on the
starboard side of an integrated swim platform as well. If there is swim
platform on the boat, look above it, on the edge of it, and under it on the
starboard side. It should be there somewhere. This assumes that the
Hurricane is a fiberglass boat. If it's an aluminum boat, I have no idea
where it is, but would guess it's also somewhere near the starboard transom,
probably with some sort of tag fastened to the hull or decking.

See photo at:

enlarge if you need to.

See the plate to the right of the outboard? Bingo. :-)

Wonder how he's gonna do a rubbing off of that? It doesn't look like it's
got any 3D relief to it.

I also wonder if maybe the plate has gone missing. Not sure how anyone
could have missed anything that obvious.

When the OP first asked, I did a quick Google for his boat and found a
couple of stern view pictures of two that were for sale. Neither had an
obvious plate like the one Chuck found. Either that or you just couldn't
see them.
I thought the hull number had to be put on in a way that it would be obvious
if it was tampered with ...

That has been the experience with each boat I have owned........it was
always imprinted in the gelcoat and always on the starboard side on the
transom.

That method is not tamperproof as on can easily grind out the numbers,
re-gelcoat and imprint a new number in the new gelcoat. ;-)

The numbers should be stamped into the plate. If so, it's possible to
get a rubbing by pressing very lightly with the pencil. Even the
smallest depression will show up with a careful enough technique.

I'd be reluctant to buy a boat with a missing HIN. Theoretically, the
plate isn't supposed to be removable without doing some serious damage
to the hull.....but I wouldn't be easily convinced that's the case by
looking at the plate in the photo. Almost looks like its held on with
pop rivets. (!)

That's pretty typical on fiberglass hulls.
