Winter Damage to Volvo Penta 5.0GL Motor

I just found out today after pulling my boat out for the first time
this year that the engine block is cracked due to freezing over last
winter. Dumb me. What I don't get is why the freeze plugs didn't blow.
Check out: http://www.nelles.com/boat/crack.jpg. I'll be checking with
a Volvo Penta dealership Monday but thought I'd pass this on to this
group for comments. Can it be welded? Thanks in advance for any
valueable input provided.

Because the so called freeze plugs aren't really freeze plugs.

I don't know, you might be screwed. Repairing the damage on the
outside is probably possible, but the block could also be cracked in
the inside , through cylinders too.

If you don't have any luck witht he dealer supplying a satisfactory
answer,t hen you might also check with a reputable machine shop, for at
least a second opinion.

Good Luck!

Thanks all for the comments. Service center of course said the same
thing. I'll be replacing the motor. Done in 2 weeks. $4,000 deep.
Needless to say this ex- SoCal. boy will be learning how to winterize
from now on.
