quick gauge question
 

how much work would it be to install a new gas guage in my '95 18ft
Neptune fishing boat? The current guage has apparently just quit on me
for good and not knowing how much gas is in the tank is pretty scary.
Do I need a mechanic to run the wires deep into the gas tank or is it
something I can install myself?

Test your gauge electrically and find it is probably o.k., more than
likely the float in the fuel tank has submerged due to absorbing fuel
until it sank. You will probably need to fix the 'sending unit' not
the gauge.

The float assembly can usually be removed using a screw driver and a pair
of pliers to remove the wire to the sending unit.

You mean a fuel tank sending unit. The gauge is the thing on your
dashboard.

These things are short-lived, as is obvious if you look at how they are
constructed and consider the constant motion they endure. And as is
obvious if you consider the rapid turnover of spares at the chandler's.

So a proper boat makes this an easy change-out. You should have an access
panel to get to it and to inspect your tank for corrosion. The replacement
sender kit will have the instructions you need.
