Yamaha 150hp Outboard Overheat Warning/Beep

Folks: Was hoping someone might be able to help us with a warning from
my dad's new boat since the dealer is criminally uninterested in
anything (and has sold him a boat with a radio that doesn't work, among
other things). In any event, the situation is: a brand-new 22 foot
center console powered by a 150-hp Yamaha 4-stroke outboard. We were on
the second brief test run, and the rpms were below 2000. We opened it
up a bit, no higher than half throttle, and we activiated the trim
tabs. At that point the overheat warning alarm came on and we throttled
down. We're not sure at all what might be causing this -- the cool
water inlet seems to be working fine and the warning didn't come back
-- but we didn't increase the throttle again. I know we need to check
the inlet to see if it's clogged but wouldn't it be clogged all the
time and not just at certain RPM?

Anyway, was hoping someone might have some thoughts. Thanks for your
time!

If it's brand new, take it to another dealer and let them fix it under
warranty.

Anyway, was hoping someone might have some thoughts.

First, diagnose overheating vs false alarm.

Is the jacket water discharge port (pee slot) discharging water? Is it HOT?
Have you read the manual? Activated the trim tabs?

Yes, it's discharging water. We didn't check to see if it was hot on
the boat. We have read the manual -- it simply says "check cool water
inlet." And the trim tabs were active just before this happened -- why
would that matter, if you don't mind my asking?

Thanks

John
