Trolling Motor Chooice???

I'm contemplating adding a trolling motor to my Bayliner model 1954. I can't
decide which to use between a 4-cycle kicker (5 HP) or a electric bow
mounted minn kota. Any thoughts??? Boat weighs approx 2000lbs, use is mostly
inland lakes.

Thanks for cogent comments!!

It really depends on what you are trolling for, and how much. For
fishing for bass around docks, banks and other structure, you can't
beat a bow mounted electric trolling motor, of which Minn Kota is my
favorite. If you are going to be trolling for landlocked salmon,
walleye, lake trout, etc. where you'll be trolling constantly, it'd be
nice to have a 5 hp kicker.

Minn Kota bow mount. Much more versatile. If you get the Auto Pilot, you
can steer from anywhere in the boat, and is good for fishing along and
amoung structure. Plus it trolls well for trout and walleye and lake
salmon. Probably a better trolling motor regards speed than an outboard.
Probably the same total weight with 2 batteries but is placed better in a
19' boat.

Had 2 MinnKotas including a remote control--they both sucked big time.
My new remote control Motorguide is wayyy better and always goes where
the remote tells it to--unlike the MK. Also found the MK support
people to be total assholes when you report problems with their
products.

That's odd. I had a Motorguide that was trouble from the day I had it,
and there customer service was next to nothing. That piece of crap
first broke after using it for two hours. Okay, send it to Motorguide,
they "fix" it, send it back, used it twice, third time, same thing,
something in the circuit board kept going bad. Send it back, again they
"fix" it, same thing happened AGAIN. Now, when I suggested they either
give me a full refund, or send a NEW unit back to me, the customer
support people just absolutely refused to do that. I sold it. I bought
a MinnKota, and still have it, and have never, ever had a problem with
it.
