Johnson 1974 tilt replacement motor???

G'day everyone... we recently purchased an old 1960's half cabin with a
1974 50 hp johnson outboard (our bit for recycling! heehee)
unfortunately the tilt system is f**ked we were told by the seller that
the moter (which is seized due to age and salt) can be replaced with a
yamaha or suzuki bike starter motor....

any one out there heard of this or has any other suggestions?

i'm not able to lift and lower the motor and my partner is not as
strong as he once was either... we have disconnected the motor for now
so that it is easier than if the hydraulics was still connected.

looking forward to hearing from you soon,

cheers

Julie

Hi Julie

Not quite sure where you are; in oz?? if so have a look at the Qld
version of the trading post, there are usually lots of marine wreckers
advertising there, mostly between Bris & the G/coast. They'll send you
one usually on a if it doesn't work they'll try another sort of thing.

If you're not in OZ then apologies because you'll have no idea what I'm
saying:-)

Good luck.

the time!

The 1974 50 was the last year for the large brackets & large gearcase -
the motor should be a Sierra 18-6761. See if it looks like this:

I don't know about the 50, but on a 74 135hp there were two types of
pumps/motors used, Prestolite, and another, Clayco I think. The two
aren't interchangeable, that I DO know.
