beautiful computer desk cistom made for boat powered by twin Detroit GM Diesels
I thought some of the folks in this newsgroup would appreciate the
craftsmanship of someone who built a custom desk for a large boat as mentioned in a binary newsgroup. I've edited the text of the two messages to present only the pertinent facts here. ------------------- From: "Mike XXXXXXX" Newsgroups: alt.binaries.pictures.woodworking Subject: Mahogany Desk Message-ID: Date: Tue, 14 Feb 2006 06:54:39 GMT Attached are some photos of a mahogany computer desk I just completed for a client. The desk is made from Honduras mahogany and A-1 Genuine Mahogany plywood. The tops and dividers are plywood with everything else being from solid stock. The drawer in the middle has a mahogany face, but the rest (sides, bottom & pencil drawer) are soft maple. The two main compartments to the sides (not the angled doors) are for each of my clients. She is going to put her laptop on her side while he's going to use the other as a TV tray (so they say). I put shelf pin holes in each, so they can configure them as they need. The center section, below the drawer, has a pull-out tray for their printer/fax/copier as well as shelves for a DVD player and VCR. The end-most doors simply have angled shelves to store their DSL modem, power strips & chargers, etc. The desk is constructed as 3 separate carcasses, connected with connector bolts, then fastened to the bulkhead of the boat. ("Bulkhead" might not be the correct term here). The boat has no flat walls, so I had to get a little creative when it came time to bolt it to the boat. I designed the entire thing in AutoCAD and use CutList Plus to help with the materials estimates. I spent 30-40 hours designing the desk and working with the client. This desk started out as a simple, 4-legged table to put her laptop on. However, as things evolved, so did the desk. =============================== Photo of the boat in a follow-up message with the following coordinates: Newsgroups: alt.binaries.pictures.woodworking Subject: Mahogany Desk Message-ID: Date: Wed, 15 Feb 2006 03:31:10 GMT Here is a pict of the boat. My favorite part is the twin Detroit GM Diesels. I know nothing about marine diesels engines (or land-locked ones for that matter), but they sure are intriguing. -- "El Watusi" In the annals of hypocrisy, Dick Cheney will live forever. - Dave Marsh |
