quick car rack question......
Hi,
I have been reading and reading in this group and elsewhere for info, but I still need some clarification regarding exactly which rack to buy for my 1992 honda accord station wagon. (canoes) I walked out to the car and peeled up the plastic strip on the roof and found threaded stubs sticking up where a rack would mount. I desire to purchase a used rack, will any yakima or thule rack that is "non-gutter" work? If not, which ones in particular? I think I will then need to purchase the correct honda kit for it, yes? Some one in this group did not use an extender kit for their honda station wagon rack and their boats came flew off. What is the extender kit? Would something like the rack below work?: http://cgi.ebay.com/Yakima-Q-Tower-R...cm dZViewItem Thanks! I would feel weird asking a Yakima rep when I plan to buy it used. Sincerely, Tor OK, maybe not so quick of a question. |

(canoes) I walked out to the car and peeled up the plastic strip on the roof and found threaded stubs sticking up where a rack would mount. How many threaded inserts were there? It seems that if there were several of these per side, that it's likely that these would be for mounting tracks not towers... Tracks are the channels into which the yakima towers would mount that are similar to the many tracks that are used to support factory mounted roof racks. In which case you would need to either find original Honda tracks or buy the generic yakima ones, and then drill them to match the spacing of the inserts on your roof. http://www.yakima.com/home.html to see what I mean, follow Products: Rack Systems: Permanent. Then click on Tracks. FWIW, my brother, who used to work in a windsurfing shop, used to install these regularly on cutomer vehicles using stainless steel sheet metal screws. They would put a screw like every six inches. If your pilot hole is the correct size, this would be a very strong, reliable system. (canoes) Got to the Thule or Yakima web site and run through their "select a rack" option. It will ask you about the make/model/year of your car and tell you exactly what parts you need. Mike |

I think I will then need to purchase the correct honda kit for it, yes? Go to http://www.thuleracks.com and http://www.yakima.com and put your car information into the fit guide. It will tell you what parts to get for each brand. You can then know what parts to look for either new or used. A typical non-raingutter car will use towers (common), crossbars (common, but come in different lengths for different width cars), and fit pieces (specific to the kind of car). Those with factory roof rails or roof tracks typically use different types of mountings. Towers for use with raingutter cars differ from those used for non-raingutter cars. -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Timothy J. I have been using this on a couple of small cars for boats up to 17 feet. I haven't tried it with our 22 foot tandem. It is quick, fool proof, INEXPENSIVE, but not cheap. I strongly advise using bow and stern tie-downs, though (belt and suspenders) because it isn't as solid or permanent as a bolt on. Both of these sites have very good info. http://www.maloneautoracks.com/inflatable.html http://www.handirackuk.com/ I have a handirack set and they work just fine... it's not just advise though, you MUST use bow and stern tiedowns... Also, if it's raining, expect to get wet inside the car... -- John Nelson ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chicago Area Paddling/Fishing Page http://www.chicagopaddling.org http://www.chicagofishing.org (A Non-Commercial Web Site: No Sponsors, No Paid Ads and Nothing to Sell) |
