In that kind of water, I really don't think I'd want to be piloting up
top

Cool pics, though

That is a good picture but I'm not sure I would have chosen to go out.

Most newer sportfish don't even have a front cabin window let alone a
lower inside helm. The visibility is so poor compared to the
flybridge that you wouldn't want to drive there anyway.

Breakers roughly five times higher than my gunwale? I *know* I wouldn't
be going out... ;)

did you check out the picture of the little 20 footer that was going
to attempt the inlet?

No, didn't see it. Do you have the URL for it?

Sounds like a good way to become a statistic.

We lose 20 footers every year down here and the inlets in south FL are
not all that dangerous for the most part. Mostly they capsize off
shore, particularly on the east coast.

The south shore of Long Island gets a fair number of inlet capsizings.
It's my impression, not backed by data, that more get in trouble
returning than going out. I wonder if there are any numbers on that?

check out the wednesday pictures - the last ones with the shots of
them returning - i think later in the series is a picture of a boat
where you can only see the antennas.

Thanks. Did you see the Bertram 33 out there?

Just like my old boat, wish I still had it sometimes.

Looks a lot like Jupiter Inlet in the winter. Scary.

I was just reading somewhere that the CG regards Jupiter as
unnavigable. I imagine that would probably come as news to many who
live around there.

Were you able to take your 50 through there in decent conditions?

I'm still trying to get up my nerve to take the GB out at Port St
Lucie.

I did, but it was pure luck. As you know, Jupiter Inlet is unmarked because
the bottom moves around so much. I approached the wrong way (from the
north), following the surface color and got lucky because it was high tide
and only running breaking 4-5 footers. Even still, my depth alarm kept
going off every time we dipped between crests. Plus, we were being buzzed
by the photo helicopter. I had no clue what that was all about until I got
the proofs in the mail 6 weeks later. Generally, Jupiter Inlet should be
approached from the south side, and, IMHO, should be avoided completely from
November to April. After that experience I would call the local Sea Tow
skipper before going out. He was always helpful in giving up to date advice
as to recent shoaling and recommended tracks.

boatpix? They got me twice but I never saw them. The first time was
out of Key Largo. The second was returning from the Air & Sea show.
Amazing photos from a helicopter we never saw. They will sell you a 4X8
photo (think a sheet of plywood) for just over $1K.
