Hi

I have just bought a Simms Super V (yet to buy an engine) as a 1st
boat.

Being a total virgin to this world i am looking for any advice i can
get. Such as what engine should i get, is 115hp plenty enough for
wakeboarding?

How far could i safely take this out (with the max size engine for the
boat)....?

Any tips, advice would be great....cheers

How far out i mean on a calm day...ie could i take it from Portsmouth
to Isle of Wight?

Paul,
This is a calm water boat made for lakes or very protected water. On a very
calm day, you could safely use this boat at sea, but too many times
"unexpected" storms can get very severe before you can get home or into a
protected cove.

My understanding is the weather in the English Channel can change very
quickly. If the wind picked up and was coming from the east over the
English Channel, it would get very nasty. It would not take much to get
green water coming on board that boat.

Thanks for the welcome and advice...

I'll give it a go close to the coast and maybe take it down to spain
for the summer...see how it goes and maybe upgrade next summer....

Is there essentials i need? I've got the anchor...would i need a
radio?? i sound like a right idiot!!!

Not sure, i need to look into that. I do know that a RYA NATIONAL
POWERBOAT CERTIFICATE (LEVEL 2) is needed..

Don't know your regulations over there...but here you would be expected
to have certain minimal safety equipment...such as PFDs, heaving line,
bailer, whistle or horn and a light if out at night.
Check out your local requirements.
I'd recommend a half decent VHF radio and at least a hand bearing
compass in case fog rolls in..
I looked at a google map and it appears that the island is only five
miles off the coast, and inside the channel. If the weather report is
for a fine day, I'd try it.

Definately..

Just found some Radios that cover all frequencies worldwide at £60
which seems a good deal...

I think this boat will take a 115hp engine (max)...what sort of price
is reasonable for a decent second hand one?

Paul, I strongly second Reggie's suggestion, and heartily urge you not to
ignore it. The single most dangerous thing aboard a boat of any kind is
ignorance. It will raise the probability of disaster to odds you would
laugh at were you in a casino or a racetrack, except now you're wagering
your life.

Take the course. Before you launch in the boat. Please.
