C'mon Harry.

You can contribute something useful. You have the knowledge and the
communication skills.

Yes, the tone of the NG has changed. Hopefully for good. If your parody
indicates that you find the content boring or sophomoric then liven it
up, (with on-topic material presented in a civil manner).

Making fun of some of the content here isn't going to get everybody
back to arguing politics with you, (hopefully).

Rebuilding this NG is a process, not an event. With 99% of the
political bickering and name calling swept aside we will eventually
attract a greater number of boaters to the NG
and many of them will have useful comments, challenging questions, and
specific expertise to share. Give it a chance.

We've been like the residents of a trashed out shack that pile sewage
and garbage in the front yard and then complain that there isn't a
better class of people moving into the vacant houses on either side.

Every day we get beyond the "old" rec.boats the better our prospects
for permanent success. The group is proving that it can be done.

And I'm pleasantly surprised at what an amazing transformation it has
been. Congratulations to all concerned.

We're going boating for the weekend so I'll be offline for a few days.
Hopefully the truce will still be in effect when we get back.

Our oldest son (the law student) is here with his GF and they've
decided that they'd like to ring in the new year on the boat. It
didn't take too much arm twisting to talk me into it. We'll probably
head north up Pine Island Sound towards Cayo Costa Island. Cayo Costa
and North Captiva both have long, nearly deserted beaches directly on
the Gulf of Mexico. They're great places for shelling and beach
combing in general, lots of exotic birds, and beautiful turquoise
green tropical water. People have also been known to catch some nice
Redfish and Tarpon up that way but it's early in the season for that.
Temperature forecast for the weekend is around 80 degrees, should be
nice.

Happy New Year everyone, and good boating.

Disagree. I wouldn't mind the politics if it didn't lead to the vulgar name-calling
and bitterness that went with it. The problem is that politics can't be discussed
without resorting to 'attack-mode', which is why *both* should be banned.

Here's a fair question for you: if the newsgroup is vacuous and boring
without the bitchy name calling and political fights, (as that is all
that is missing from before),

1) Can you assist in providing some more stimulating boating content?

or

2) If you're not interested in the boating content, would "rec.boats"
be the best NG for you?

It would have to be acknowledged as reality that people who hung out
here simply to watch the daily stink fights must be very disappointed
with the group these last couple of weeks.

I did not say and don't think that the news group is vacuous

That is a welcome change.

My point was that *if* most of us can manage self restraint
there will be no need for banned topics or any one
attempting to impose censor like control. I was drawing a
contrast between extremes and expressing my preference that
we not overshoot and become overly bland and narrow.

We likely have common goals; an enjoyable, informative and
interesting forum. I prefer that it mostly relate to boating
but have no problem with cordial tangents or even lively
debate on virtually any subject. I do appreciate the
improved tone and congratulate you for your persuasive
efforts and all posters for the results achieved.

As to your questions:

1) I try to contribute when I have something relevant to add
and also occasionally post something irrelevant as if I were
talking with friends.

2) If I were not interested in boating content I wouldn't be
here.

Happy New Year, Bert

I thought we'd lost you. Glad to see you're still aboard.

Any insights on the differences between the way that liberals and
conservatives boat?
(That's "boat", with a "b") :-)

Nobody can control anybody else. The change you're viewing in the NG is
the result of self control among most of the previous worst offenders.
Surprising difference, isn't it?

I can't recall one *not one* post Bert ever contributed to this
newsgroup that had interesting or informative boating content.

I realize that "interesting or informative" is subjective, but by any
standards, Bert's few boating-related posts here take banal to a lower
level.
