I can't make out a single word from the vessel in distress. |

I noticed the author provided an e-mail address if anyone wanted more details or high resolution copies of the pictures. New Zealand address, I think. Eisboch |

Lesson here, I think, is to try to modulate the excitement and speak as normally and clearly as you can, given the circumstances. Eisboch |

It also says a lot for an an EPIRB with integral GPS and registered boat ID. Hope I never have to use it but I'm glad we have one. It appears the CG found him OK so perhaps the actual audio was clearer than the recording. |

They are supposed to be serviced every so often and I haven't done that. Add it to the list for next year. Which brings up another subject. Life rafts. I installed a six person raft but because I don't charter the boat I've not had it tested or repacked. It's about three years old now I think. Add another item to the list. Eisboch |

We bought a new one last spring since my old one had 20+ years of hard sail boat racing on it. They offered an option for vacuum bagging in a hermetically sealed package which supposedly extends the recommended repack interval to three or four years. |

I'd suggest if he was an American or even Canadian with an accent you're more familiar with it might help. As an Ozzy I could mostly understand the substance & given the size of the hole:-) ..................... he did a pretty good job:-) K |

In addition to being a pain in the ass to remove it and lug it off the boat, there's only a few places around here to take it. I don't think there's any in MA. I'd have to take it to RI or CT. If equipped, you are also supposed to have the automatic engine room fire extinquishers weighed - every year, I think. Haven't done that for a while either. The gauges read fine. Eisboch |

There used to be a place in Medford Mass. that did repacking and inspection.

The place in Rhode Island, assumming they are still in business, might be just as close for me. I was just thinking that now might be a good time to get this stuff done, rather than waiting until spring when it gets busy. I just refuse to go outside unless it's above 40 degrees. Eisboch |

Here's one that popped up on Google: I.M.P. Fishing Gear, Ltd 44 South Street, South Terminal New Bedford, MA 02740 Phone: 508-993-0010 Toll Free: 1-800-467-8865 http://www.impmarine.com/impmarine/ A quick call to Fairhaven Shipyard would probably generate some leads also. They are a first class operation: http://www.fairhavenship.com/ Same with JTs in Newport, RI http://www.jtschandlery.com/ |

Did they raise the vessel and discover the bottom torn away (as though from hitting a submerged container, or something), or are those photos of some previous work that was done before they got underway? If the previous repair failed or they actually lost that much of the bottom, it's amazing they had three minutes to call for help and abandon ship. |
