After 16 months on a new Power Head my 50 Merc started to seize at top
end. Compression test showed #1 & 3 at 128 and #2 at 26 pounds. Separated the crack case and found the oil pump gear was stripped. Mercury shop said they had never seen a 50 with that problem. I couldn't believe that a Plastic GEAR was used to supply oil to the engine! I'm not happy trusting a plastic gear on the crank case to supply oil to the engine. I'm looking for advice on removing the oil injection system and premixing. 1. Is this adviseable 2. Do I remove the oil pump and block with a plate 3. How do I remove the oil buzzer and not affect the over heat alarm 4. I don't idle much. Will this have a negative affect on the engine At least that way I'll know for sure that the engine is being lubricated. 2003 Mercury 50 HP Serial Number OT840672 3 Cylinder / 2 Stroke Engne Any input appreciated.
