How can I tell if it is capable of carrying an 8,500 lb boat?

8500 lbs is a lot for a tandem axle trailer. Most tandems that I've
seen top out around 6500 to 7000, sometimes less.

If you know the manufacturer you could give them a call.

But if the price is right and the trailer is in good shape even adding a
third axle might still be a good deal. Champion trailer has everything you
need.

I am not sure Champion is still around. Slidell was pretty much destroyed.
Neighbor is trying to get me to go there end of March with Habitat For
Humanity to build houses.
