Poll: Bush's Ratings Bump Up

(CBS) There is good news and bad news in this poll for President George W.
Bush. Americans have become more positive about the economy; more than half
think the economy is in good shape, an 8-point increase since October.

The President's overall approval rating has risen from 35 percent in October
to 40 percent now, and his ratings on handling the economy and the war in
Iraq have also improved.

HOW IS THE WAR GOING?

Very/somewhat well
Now 46%

Oct. 2005 40%

DID U.S. DO THE RIGHT THING GOING TO WAR WITH IRAQ?

Right thing
Now 48%

Oct. 2005 42%

VIEWS OF THE ECONOMY

Good

Now 55%
10/2005 47%

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Solid improvements across the board. Should be a very happy New Year!

But when the truth continues to come out about Iraq, and the number of
dead Americans keeps climbing, Bush will be back down in the ratings
gutter, where he and his kind belong.

Harry, have someone get you a new line for the Holidays. Then you can play
that new one over and over and over and over and over and over and over and
over and over and over.........

The 2006 mid-term campaign is underway, with Bush now making half a
dozen speeches per month to resell a skeptical public on the invasion
and continuing occupation of Iraq.
IMO, the R's should have kept their closer in the bullpen until a later
inning. He'll tire, and the public will tire, of the same old fastball
pitch after pitch. Worse yet, for the R's, the opposing team will
quickly figure out how to hit his predictable attempts right out of the
park.

I continue to wish that GWB would do such a splendid job as POTUS that
the overwhelming majority (not a bare minority or a 2-3 point majority)
of Americans could say,
"There goes my president. I may not agree with him all the time, but
it's easy to admire and respect him." Unfortunately, we ain't there.

You could have a point here. But the corollary to that argument is that
Bush needs to ride the wave while the news is good. The economic numbers
coming out lately have been fantastic, driving up consumer confidence. This
is reflected in the 8 point bump in peoples' positive view of the economy.
And as you know, confident consumers spend more, making it a self-fulfilled
prophecy.

Another area where Americans are feeling more confident is with the war in
Iraq. There's a 6 point jump in the number of people who think we did the
right thing by going into Iraq...and an equal 6 point jump in the number of
people who think the war in Iraq is going well. The December 15th election
in Iraq will only help to boost people's confidence.

The final boost to Bush's poll numbers is the daily reminder coming from
Iraq that we are in a war against terrorism. Everyday, we see suicide
bombing terrorists blowing up civilians riding buses in Iraq, and we realize
how fortunate we have been to be immune from such attacks for over 4 years
now. That's pretty amazing in a time of war...and people are beginning to
give Bush the credit he deserves.

What does it matter what the polls indicate? The electorate was stupid
enough to put this guy and his handlers in office; who really cares what
they say about his performance?

The important issue is what is happening to our country. Is there
anything coming out of this administration these days we can be proud
of? All I read about is the tanking war in Iraq and more people dying,
our miserable relationship with China, our new owners, bribery and other
investigations into government corruption and dishonesty, more assaults
on the environment and feeble attempts to paint a victory out of all of it.

I get such a kick out of all this torture posturing these days. If we
really don't torture and follow all the worlds's rules about this
despicable practice, why can't we put it into law via McCain's amendment?

This administration would be such a different voice had ANY of these
dipsticks served any real time in the military, especially the kind of
time McCain did. commander-in-chief, my ass; this guy has broken or
bankrupted everything he has touched in his life. Our government, the
economy, the environment, human rights, women's rights, social security,
health care, disaster response, etc. will be no exception.

I really believe that history will judge him as the worst president, ever.

Maybe it is only you who is stupid. Or maybe it was the DNC and their
backing of a stiff for a candidate, that the majority of the voters could
not stand. Maybe you ought to look in the mirror.

Face the facts and read the newspapers, Newsweek, Time, Playboy or
wherever most people get their information: the man and his handlers are
incompetant and out of touch with the needs of this country and the
world. If they had a brain they would resign and get somebody else in
their with priorities more important than getting more money to rich
people, most of whom are who are too gutless to serve their country.

Interesting selection there. I prefer to scan Yahoo News, USA Today,
Washington Times and the Wall Street Journal. They aren't saying the same
negative things that your newspapers are saying. Perhaps you should change
your news sources. It might make you less pessimistic in life.
