Merck to cut 7,000 jobs

GM to cut 30,000 jobs

Ford to cut 4000 jobs

Casual Corner is closing 525 stores.

Interstate Bakeries has already shed 4000 jobs and is looking at
dropping another 450.

These are real jobs, not the McBush jobs Presidummy touts.
I'm not familiar with Merck's situation, so I can't comment on that.

GM's story has been all over the news. Nobody's blaming "the economy"
for their problems. Rather, the public's not buying their cars in
large enough numbers, and they're being bled to death by some very
stupid labor agreements, some of which involve paying people full
salary to sit around doing absolutely nothing.
Ford's got the same problems.

Casual Corner is probably a victim of bigger discounters, especially
since the clothing's pretty much the exact same crap with a different
label.

Interstate Bakeries....Harry, do your research. The company filed for
bankruptcy in September of 2004. Their problems have little or
nothing to do with politics. Competition is the main issue, as well
as dietary changes in this country - same thing that's hammered
Krispy Kreme's business.
My comment was that we were losing real jobs.
So? It was politically motivated, right? If you really stretched, you
could say Casual Corner is closing stores because people are
financially stressed, so they've left CC for the discounters. But the
others? That dog won't hunt.
No, my comment was that we were losing real jobs. Most of Bush's touted
"job growth" is in low pay, low benefit McJobs. I'm interested in growth
in jobs that provide good pay and benefits, not in fill-in jobs. Fill-in
jobs won't replace what is being lost in manufacturing.

Just because a job pays well, doesn't make it a "real" job. Consider the
huge salaries paid to professional athletes...or the huge salaries paid
to some schlep sitting around doing absolute nothing just because his job
is protected by a union.

Your general lack of compassion is exceeded by your lack of knowledge of
lingua Yiddish. As a verb, to schlep means to take an arduous journey,
usually carrying something heavy. As a noun. a schlep is someone who
performs such work, literally or figuratively. Figuratively, to look into
people's orifices all day long - I would consider that schlep work, no
matter the huge fees dentists charge.

It could be worse. I could be schlepping around a pro-union agenda in a
strengthening anti-union environment.
