Outboard - water from wrong place?
 

While winterizing my Johnson 15 hp outboard yesterday, I noticed water
coming from a place that I didn't recall it coming from last time I did
this. That was 4 years ago - the dealer's done it in the intervening years.

Look in the red circle. Is that normal? When the boat's in the water, I get
quite a bit of spray from that spot, aimed forward at the transom.
Meanwhile, the drive unit grease looked perfect - almost the same color as
the new stuff.

I'm not an expert on this but it looks like a water tube has sprung a leak.
Any water coming from the teltale or thru the prop?

Nothing from the prop. What's the teltale?

Doug, the telltale is the pee stream, indicating that the water pump is
circulating water.

That's working fine. And, according to the manual, this motor's got a thing
that limits RPMs if it overheats. It's never happened (in case this is a
clue that's worth anything).

Looks like maybe the seal for the water tube up the leg is leaking. If it
is like a Mariner / Yamaha there is a water tube that goes from the power
head to the water pump and on top of the water pump is a rubber donut type
seal that the tube goes in to, or there could be a leak in the tube. Might
be time to pull the foot and check the impeller and look at the seals.
