Just saw that Tropical Storm Gamma may be heading our way:

Will I even be able to get insurance tomorrow? I started the application
with BoatUS today, and they said to call tomorrow to activate it once the
deal is finalized. But that was before NOAA issued their latest report.

Ironically, the bank gave me the check today without getting verification of
insurance. I think they forgot. I could close on the deal tomorrow, but do
I really want to if insurance won't cover the boat until after the storm
passes?

If you advised the company or agent that you will be purchasing and picking
up the new boat sometime over the next week or so the policy will be in
effect once you do so.

Although you cannot "officially" bind coverage with a VM message, it would
be in your best interest to verify your conversation with your agent via VM
tonight.

After that, relax as you are covered. ;-)

of the binder. When things go wrong it's what is on paper that
counts.

For what it's worth, the weekend conditions on the gulf look halfway
decent (seas under 3 feet). Are you planning to come down inside or
outside?

For what it's worth, the weekend conditions on the gulf look halfway
decent (seas under 3 feet). Are you planning to come down inside or
outside?

Outside...unless it's rough. I doubt that I'll leave the marina before noon
tomorrow...once the inspection and sea trial and paperwork is done.

It's roughly 140 miles. If the seas are flat, I'll be home in 5 hours or
so. If the seas are up, it could be an all day affair...ducking inside when
I can.

At least the winds are out of the northeast...which means they'll be at my
back the whole time.


The longest stretch that I'd have to run outside would be from Venice to
Boca Grande Pass, right?

Not sure I understand your question. You can run inside the entire
way if you want, only a few slow speed zones and you should fit under
most of the bridges with no problem. The big decision is really at
Tampa since the Sarasota inlets are questionable without local
knowledge, probably OK for outboards however, just not in my boat.

Pine Island Sound is wide open, usually flat water, and essentially
with no enforced speed restrictions. There is a narrow cut close to
the beach on the north side of Boca Grande inlet which avoids the long
trip out and around. I've been through there twice with 5 1/2 ft
draft and had no problems. The locals do it all the time it appears.

Venice.

I bought a boat in Longboat Key about 5 years ago, and drove it down to
Naples on the outside. I've been on the intracoastal north of Venice, but
it was 12+ years ago in a rental. I also did some boating in Sarasota
Bay...but that was 4 or 5 years ago too.

I know the waters from Redfish Pass south...but have only travelled the
stretch of water by Cabbage Key and Useppa one time.

It shows waves 4-6 feet in the mouth of Tampa Bay...dropping to 2-4 from
Anna Maria island south to Venice...and then dropping to 0-2 from there on.
The wind is supposed to be out of the northeast, and swinging around to the
east later on...which means the land will block it, and leave the seas along
the coast pretty flat.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Gulf immediately adjacent to
sanibel/captiva flatter than Pine Island Sound tomorrow afternoon.

My experience has taught me to NEVER take the word of someone over the
phone in this sort of transaction. Said person may not even be employed
by that company the day you call back, and if you you have no
'documentation' you are in for a long, drawn out, mentally draining
process.
